Ban Krut vs Hua Hin

One is a sleepy stretch of casuarina-shaded sand; the other is a full resort town with night markets and golf courses. Both sit on the same railway line — and they could hardly be more different.

Two towns, one railway, opposite personalities

Hua Hin has been Thailand's original seaside resort since the 1920s, when the royal family built a summer palace here. Today it is a proper town: a long busy beach, seafood restaurants on stilts, the famous Cicada and night markets, golf courses, malls and a nightlife street. It is easy, comfortable and never boring.

Hua Hin beach in the evening light

Ban Krut, three hours further down the line, is what the coast looked like before all that. One quiet road runs behind a ten-kilometre beach, resorts are small and family-run, and the loudest thing at night is the sea. There is a golden hilltop temple, a modest night market, and very little else — which is precisely the point.

Good to know

Good to know

  • The train is the scenic way to link the two — book a morning departure and enjoy the coast rolling past.
  • In Ban Krut, stay on the northern stretch near Wat Thang Sai if you want the sunrise-and-temple views.
  • Hua Hin's night markets are at their best from about 6pm — go hungry.
  • Weekends change both towns: Hua Hin gets Bangkok crowds, Ban Krut gets Thai families. Midweek is quietest in both.

Choose Ban Krut for peace and authenticity

If your ideal Thai beach day is a sunrise swim, a slow breakfast, a bicycle ride under the palms and a grilled fish dinner with your feet in the sand, Ban Krut is hard to beat. The beach is long enough that you will often have a whole stretch to yourself, and the visitors are mostly Thai families rather than tour groups.

The honest trade-off: there is no nightlife to speak of, restaurant choice is limited, and you will want a bicycle or scooter to get around. English is spoken less than in the resorts further north. For many people that is exactly the Thailand they came looking for.

Choose Hua Hin for comfort and choice

Hua Hin suits travellers who want their beach with infrastructure attached: international restaurants, proper coffee, night markets every evening, water parks for the children and a hospital nearby. The Cicada weekend market alone — art stalls, live music, street food — is worth an evening.

The beach itself is decent rather than dreamy, and the town can feel busy, especially at weekends when Bangkok arrives en masse. But if you are mixing a beach break with shopping, golf or family logistics, Hua Hin simply works. Many travellers do both: a few lively days in Hua Hin, then the slow train south to decompress in Ban Krut.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

How far apart are Ban Krut and Hua Hin?

About 160 km along the coast. The train between them takes roughly 2.5–3.5 hours depending on the service, and both stations are close to their beaches.

Which has the better beach?

Ban Krut, for most tastes — longer, emptier and backed by casuarina trees rather than hotels. Hua Hin's beach is pleasant but busier, with jet skis and horse rides.

Is Ban Krut too quiet for a whole holiday?

It depends on you. Three to five slow days suit most visitors; night owls and shoppers may prefer to base themselves in Hua Hin and visit Ban Krut for a night or two.

Which is better for families?

Both work well. Hua Hin has water parks, malls and international food; Ban Krut has calm, shallow water and space to run. Families wanting activities pick Hua Hin, families wanting quiet pick Ban Krut.
