Travel services & practical info

Ban Krut is small. It does not have a bank branch, a post office or a large shopping mall. But it does have the basics: an ATM, a pharmacy, a 7-Eleven, a few small shops and accommodation staff who can usually help with tickets and transfers.

Backpacker Thailand essentials

Money & ATMs

There is a working ATM in the middle of town, between the two 7-Eleven stores, and travellers who come back year after year say withdrawals there are no trouble. So you do not have to arrive with all your baht in your pocket. Do plan to pay in cash, though: most restaurants, market stalls and smaller guesthouses only take cash, and card terminals are not guaranteed even in resorts.

Pharmacy

Suwan Pharmacy is located close to the railway station. Good for sunscreen, insect repellent, basic medicines, rehydration salts and toiletries. Outside pharmacy hours, the 7-Eleven stocks some basic health supplies.

Onward tickets & transfers

Most accommodation can help you book onward train tickets (only 3 trains per day stop at Ban Krut) or arrange private transfers to Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon or ferry ports for the southern islands. Book onward train tickets as early as possible, especially for 1st and 2nd class on weekends.

Mobile data & SIM cards

Buy and register a Thai SIM at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi airport or at a large shopping mall on the way. Then just top up credit as needed in Ban Krut.

Pre-arrival checklist

Before you arrive

  • Bring some Thai baht in cash — there is an ATM in town, but cards are rarely accepted.
  • Book onward train tickets in advance (only 3 trains/day stop here).
  • Screenshot accommodation address and directions in case signal is weak.
  • Download offline maps for Ban Krut and the surrounding area.
  • Check travel insurance covers scooter rental and medical evacuation.
  • Pack sunscreen, mosquito repellent and any prescription medicines.
  • Tell family or friends roughly where you'll be — beach coverage can be patchy.
With these basics sorted, Ban Krut is one of the easiest, most low-stress places to spend time in Thailand — and most people end up extending their stay.
