Ban Krut is a working Thai community. Shopping here is aimed at locals first, which is exactly what makes it interesting for travellers who want to see everyday life.

The local food market

The morning market runs every day by the old railway station, and it is an early one: busy from first light, with most stalls packing up by mid-morning. On Thursday afternoons the market moves to the temple ground opposite Wat Thong Chai Thammachak, and on Saturdays a smaller row of stalls sets up on the other side of the tracks. On Sunday evenings it is the beach road that comes alive instead, with stalls, tables and sometimes live music. In the mornings you will find fresh fish, vegetables, herbs, tropical fruit and prepared curries and snacks. This is where local families buy their daily ingredients — the prices are very low compared to tourist areas.

7-Eleven & small shops

Some small shops are located around the 7-Eleven store near the railway station. This is the most convenient place to stock up on bottled water, snacks, drinks and basic supplies. The pharmacy Suwan Pharmacy is also close to the railway station for medicines, sun protection and toiletries.

Evening street food stalls

In the late afternoon, street carts set up near the village selling grilled chicken, satay skewers, sticky rice, papaya salad, roti pancakes with condensed milk, fresh-squeezed juices and plastic bags of ready-made curries. You can put together a complete meal just by walking slowly and pointing at what looks good.
