The route

The only direct way north

For years, going from the Gulf coast to Chiang Mai meant a day in transit: down to Bangkok, across the city, then a flight or a night train north. Thai AirAsia's Hua Hin route removes the middle part. It is the only scheduled service out of Hua Hin Airport, and it puts Chiang Mai an hour and a quarter away.

The terminal building at Hua Hin Airport

Flight FD3901 leaves Hua Hin at 17.35 and lands in Chiang Mai at 18.50. It runs on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays until 24 October 2026, and daily from 25 October. The return, FD3900, leaves Chiang Mai at 15.40 and is back in Hua Hin at 17.05.

The routes through Bangkok

If your date falls outside the flying days, go through Bangkok. Bus or minivan from Hua Hin takes about three hours to the southern terminal, and the train three and a half to four and a half hours to Krung Thep Aphiwat. From there, Don Mueang and Suvarnabhumi between them send flights to Chiang Mai all day, about an hour and twenty minutes in the air.

The overnight sleeper is the other classic: board at Krung Thep Aphiwat in the evening, wake up in the north around twelve hours later. Book the lower berths early — they go first.

Whichever way you go, Chiang Mai's airport and railway station are both within fifteen minutes of the old city.

Good to know

Planning it

  • The Hua Hin flight is one aircraft a day — book as soon as your dates are fixed.
  • Coming from Ban Krut, take a morning train to Hua Hin and you have the whole afternoon as buffer.
  • The airport is at Bo Fai, 7 km north of Hua Hin — 10 to 15 minutes by car.
  • November to February is the best time in the north; March and April are hazy.

Sunday Walking Street

On Sundays the old town closes to traffic and fills with stalls from Tha Phae Gate inwards. Arrive before eight if you want room to walk.

Neighbourhood

Nimman

Coffee roasteries, design shops and small bars in one walkable grid west of the moat — the reason so many people extend their stay.

Where to stay

Where to stay in Chiang Mai

The evening flight lands at 18.50, which means dinner in town rather than a taxi hunt. Inside the moat you are walking distance from the temples and the markets; Nimman suits longer stays; the riverside gives you space and a short ride into the centre.
