The airport

A terminal the size of a bus station

Hua Hin Airport sits at Bo Fai, about seven kilometres north of the town centre on the old Phetkasem road — ten to fifteen minutes by car. It has one passenger terminal, a handful of check-in desks and a single gate, and for years it saw almost nothing but flying-school traffic and the occasional charter.

That changed when Thai AirAsia put Chiang Mai on the board. It is the only scheduled route out of Hua Hin, and it turns a full travel day through Bangkok into a short hop north. The scale of the place is the point: you can arrive an hour before departure and still stand at the gate with time to spare.

Getting to the airport

Getting to the terminal

From Hua Hin it is a short taxi or Grab ride north along Phetkasem Road. Hotels north of town are closer to the airport than to the night market, so ask at reception before you order a car.

From Ban Krut, take a northbound train to Hua Hin station and continue by taxi. Trains take roughly 2½ to 3½ hours depending on the service, so aim for a morning departure if you are on the evening flight — it leaves plenty of slack for a late train.

Driving is easy and parking at the terminal is free and rarely full.

Good to know

At the airport

  • Check in two hours ahead as the airline asks, but security and bag drop rarely take more than half an hour.
  • There is no lounge and very little food airside — eat before you pass security.
  • Online check-in works for this route and saves the queue.
  • The flight is operated by a single A320, so a cancellation means the next departure is days away outside the daily season.

Doi Suthep

The golden chedi on the mountain above the city, and the view back down over the valley. Half a day, including the climb up the naga staircase.

Chiang Mai Night Bazaar

Night Bazaar

Chang Klan Road turns into a market every evening of the year — handicrafts, food halls and live music a short walk from the old city.

Terraced fields at Mon Cham

Mae Rim valley

An hour north of town the road climbs into terraced hills and hill-tribe villages, cool enough for strawberries and an evening blanket.

Where to stay

Staying near the airport

There is nothing at the airport itself, and no reason to stay there. The hotels north of Hua Hin along Phetkasem are the closest, and the town centre is still only fifteen minutes away — close enough that an early flight does not mean an airport hotel.
