Peak season at its finest: dry skies almost everywhere, cooler air, calm seas — and on the quiet Gulf coast, all of it without the crowds.

January is the month the brochures are written about. The monsoons have finished on both coasts, humidity is at its yearly low, and days run warm and blue from Chiang Mai to the southern islands. It is also the busiest month of the year — flights and beachfront rooms in the famous spots book out well ahead.
On the Gulf coast the picture is especially good. The north-east monsoon that ruffles Koh Samui in December fades through January, the sea calms, and small towns like Ban Krut and Hua Hin get week after week of dry, breezy beach weather — with a fraction of the visitors that the Andaman side absorbs.

Gulf coast: excellent and getting better by the week. Ban Krut, Hua Hin and Chumphon are dry, sunny and pleasantly breezy, with calm swimming water. Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao can still catch a few windy, showery days early in the month — leftovers of the north-east monsoon — but by mid January the islands settle into proper beach weather.
The Andaman coast (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Lanta) is at its glorious, crowded peak — flat seas and reliable sun. Bangkok is dry and unusually comfortable, while the north is cool and clear: lovely hiking days around Chiang Mai and Pai, but genuinely chilly nights in the mountains, so pack a warm layer.

This is the month to do the things heat makes hard the rest of the year: cycle the coast road at Ban Krut, climb the temple hill at sunrise, explore Bangkok on foot, trek in the north. On the Gulf, swimming is back to its calm best and the long empty beaches between Hua Hin and Chumphon are at their most inviting.
If Chinese New Year falls in late January, expect a burst of regional travellers and higher prices for a week or so, especially in Bangkok, Phuket and Hua Hin — book that window early. Otherwise the smart January move is simple: skip the packed Andaman honeypots and take the same weather on the quiet Gulf coast, where a beachfront room is still easy to find.

It is arguably the best month of the year: dry, sunny and relatively cool across nearly the whole country. The trade-off is that it is peak season, so popular places are busy and prices are at their highest.
Very good. Ban Krut, Hua Hin and Chumphon are dry and breezy with calm seas. Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao may see a few windy or showery days early in the month, settling into full beach weather by mid January.
Days around Chiang Mai are warm and clear, but nights can drop to 10°C or lower, and colder still in the mountains. Bring a fleece or light jacket for evenings and early mornings.
This is high season, so the famous islands and Bangkok's sights are crowded and rooms cost more. Quieter Gulf-coast towns like Ban Krut stay relaxed even now — one of the best reasons to head that way.
