Morning boat, afternoon dive

Lomprayah's morning catamaran from Maenam calls at Koh Phangan and reaches Koh Tao before noon - fast enough that dive schools schedule afternoon boats around it. The stretch beyond Phangan is open water: pick the big catamaran and a calm-season date if you're a nervous sailor.

Route at a glance

Koh Samui to Koh Tao

  • Catamaran via Thong Sala: about 1½-2 hours
  • Morning and midday departures from Maenam
  • Open-water conditions - roughest Nov-Dec
  • Day trips possible but long; overnight is better
Good to know

Good to know

  • Take the earliest boat - afternoon Gulf chop builds in most seasons.
  • Seasickness pills work best taken 30 minutes before boarding.
  • Koh Tao day trips from Samui are rushed; one night minimum does it justice.
  • Dive gear travels free as luggage on the catamarans.
Your options

Your options

High-speed catamaran

The standard: Maenam to Mae Haad with a Thong Sala call. Buy return legs together in high season.

Slower ferries

Songserm's slower boat saves a little and takes longer - fine on glassy days.

As a stopover chain

Many travellers ride Samui → Phangan → Tao over a week or two - tickets split into legs at no real premium.
