Take the sleeper

This is the route where the night train makes perfect sense: board in Bangkok in the evening, take dinner in your berth, and roll into Chumphon just before dawn — exactly when the Koh Tao catamarans check in. Combined train-and-ferry tickets time it all for you.

Your options

Your options

By sleeper train — overnight

Second-class air-con sleepers are the sweet spot: flat beds, curtains, and arrival around 04:00–05:00 for the morning boats. Lower berths are wider — book them first.

By day train — 7–8 hours

Day services show you the whole coast — Hua Hin, Prachuap's karst bays, Ban Krut's palms. A good choice if Chumphon town or Thung Wua Laen beach is your actual goal.

By bus — about 7 hours

Comfortable coaches run day and night from Sai Tai Mai to Chumphon town. Marginally faster than the train, less romantic, and you'll need a transfer to the ferry piers.
