Three bays, one easy decision

Prachuap Khiri Khan curls around three bays framed by limestone peaks, and the town sits right on the middle one. Unlike most Thai beach stops, the pleasure here is not the town beach itself — it is the seafront life: the promenade, the fishing boats, the night market and the karst views across the water.

That makes choosing simple. Stay along or near the promenade and everything worth doing is on foot. The other two bays — Ao Noi to the north and Ao Manao to the south — are for swimmers and peace-seekers, and both are an easy ride from town.

Good to know

Good to know

  • Climb Khao Chong Krachok at sunset for the classic three-bay view — keep bags zipped, the monkeys are professionals.
  • Bring your passport or a photo of it for the Ao Manao airbase gate.
  • The pineapples grown around Prachuap are famously sweet — buy them from roadside stalls.
  • A bicycle is enough here: town, Ao Noi and Ao Manao are all within easy pedalling range on flat roads.

The town seafront: stay here first

Small hotels and family guesthouses line the promenade and the streets just behind it, many with sea views for the price of a hostel bed elsewhere. From your door you can walk to the night market, the morning market, the pier and the foot of Khao Chong Krachok, the monkey-inhabited temple hill.

Rooms are simple rather than swish — think spotless tiles, a balcony and a strong fan or air-con — but the value is remarkable. The town beach is better for strolling than swimming; locals ride the few minutes to Ao Manao when they want to get in the water.

Ao Noi and Ao Manao: the quiet ends

Ao Noi, the bay north of town, is the sleepy option: a fishing village, a temple in a cave, and a handful of small resorts and guesthouses strung along a calm shore. Stay here for early nights and morning walks, and ride into town when you want dinner and noise — it is only ten minutes away.

Ao Manao, south of town, has the best swimming beach in the area — a clean crescent of sand inside a Thai air-force base. Visitors are welcomed through the gate with ID, and there is limited simple accommodation near the beach itself. Most people sensibly stay in town and cycle or ride in for beach days.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Can you stay at Ao Manao beach?

There is some simple accommodation near the beach inside the airbase, but choice is limited. Most visitors stay in town and ride in — the gate is open to the public during the day, and you may be asked to show ID.

Is the town beach in Prachuap good for swimming?

Not really — it is a working seafront with fishing boats, better for walks and views. For swimming, head to Ao Manao, a few minutes south, which is clean, calm and sandy.

Where is the night market?

Right in the town centre, a short walk from the seafront guesthouses. It runs nightly and is one of the best reasons to stay near the promenade — the seafood is superb and cheap.

Is Prachuap Khiri Khan expensive?

No — it is one of the best-value seaside towns in Thailand. Sea-view rooms, big seafood dinners and motorbike hire all cost noticeably less than in the tourist resorts further north.
