The Gulf keeps its nerve

By August the two-coast story has reached its widest gap. The Andaman side is at or near its wettest — Phuket, Krabi and Koh Lanta see their heaviest rain and roughest seas of the year. The Gulf coast, from Hua Hin down through Ban Krut and Chumphon to Samui and Tao, simply carries on: warm, mostly sunny days with occasional showers that rarely outstay their welcome.

One date to know: 12 August is Mother's Day, the Queen Mother's birthday and a national holiday. Thai families head to the coast for the long weekend, so beach towns within reach of Bangkok — Hua Hin and Ban Krut included — fill with domestic visitors. It's a lovely, festive time to be there; just book your room ahead.

Good to know

  • Book beach rooms early for the Mother's Day long weekend around 12 August — Thai families fill the coast.
  • August showers on the Gulf are brief — plan beach mornings and treat a downpour as a lunch break.
  • Skip Andaman beach plans this month; if you must go west, expect rain and respect the red flags.
  • Khanom, south of Samui on the mainland, is an August gem — calm sea, pink dolphins, almost no tourists.

Coast by coast: August's weather

Gulf coast: good beach weather — around 30–33°C, a calm and swimmable sea, and showers that come as brief interludes rather than washed-out days. Samui, Tao and Phangan remain reliable, and the mainland coast matches them. Andaman coast: this is its wettest stretch of the year — persistent rain, big swell, and west-coast beaches often flying red flags.

Bangkok is hot with regular afternoon storms, busiest around the Mother's Day weekend. The north is at its greenest — Chiang Mai and the hills are lush and misty, wonderful for slow travel if you don't mind rearranging a day around the rain.

What to do and where to go

Stay Gulf-side and August is generous: swim and snorkel off Koh Tao, laze on Samui's quieter southern beaches, or take the mainland route — Hua Hin for polish, Ban Krut for empty sand and sunrise, Khanom near Nakhon Si Thammarat for pink dolphins and a coast few foreigners reach.

Around 12 August, lean into the holiday mood: beach towns fill with Thai families, restaurants set out their best seafood, and jasmine — the Mother's Day flower — appears everywhere. Book beachfront rooms for that weekend early, then enjoy one of the most cheerfully Thai weekends of the coastal year.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Is August a good time to visit Thailand?

On the Gulf coast, yes — warm days, swimmable sea and only occasional showers in places like Ban Krut, Hua Hin, Koh Samui and Koh Tao. The Andaman side is at its wettest, so it's the wrong month for Phuket beach plans.

What is Mother's Day in Thailand?

12 August, the Queen Mother's birthday, is celebrated as Mother's Day and is a national holiday. Thai families travel for the long weekend, so coastal towns get festively busy — book rooms ahead.

How rainy is the Gulf coast in August?

Not very. Expect mostly sunny, warm days with occasional short showers, often in the late afternoon or evening. The Gulf's real rainy season doesn't arrive until October and November.

Where should I go in Thailand in August?

Choose the Gulf: Koh Samui, Koh Tao and Koh Phangan for islands, or the mainland coast at Hua Hin, Ban Krut, Chumphon and Khanom for the same weather with far fewer people.
