Markets & local shops

Ban Krut is a working Thai community. Shopping here is aimed at locals first, which is exactly what makes it interesting for travellers who want to see everyday life.

Ban Krut local market

The local food market

The fresh food market runs opposite Wat Thong Chai Thammachak, near the village centre. Ask locals what day it operates (it is not daily). In the mornings you will find fresh fish, vegetables, herbs, tropical fruit and prepared curries and snacks. This is where local families buy their daily ingredients — the prices are very low compared to tourist areas.

7-Eleven & small shops

Some small shops are located around the 7-Eleven store near the railway station. This is the most convenient place to stock up on bottled water, snacks, drinks and basic supplies. The pharmacy Suwan Pharmacy is also close to the railway station for medicines, sun protection and toiletries.

Evening street food stalls

In the late afternoon, street carts set up near the village selling grilled chicken, satay skewers, sticky rice, papaya salad, roti pancakes with condensed milk, fresh-squeezed juices and plastic bags of ready-made curries. You can put together a complete meal just by walking slowly and pointing at what looks good.

Practical shopping

What to buy in Ban Krut

  • Big bottles of drinking water — essential for the beach.
  • Fresh tropical fruit: pineapple, watermelon, mango and dragon fruit in season.
  • Grilled snacks from evening stalls — cheap, tasty and very local.
  • Sarongs and lightweight cotton clothing for beach and temple visits.
  • Sunscreen, mosquito repellent and basic medicines at Suwan Pharmacy.
For larger purchases — clothes, electronics or brand-name items — plan a side trip to Prachuap Khiri Khan or Chumphon and return to Ban Krut for the peace and quiet.
