Best time to visit Khao Sok

The short answer: December to April is the dry, easy season. The longer answer is that a rainforest is never really dry — and that is its magic.

A rainforest with its own rules

Khao Sok sits inland, on the western side of the peninsula's mountains, so it follows a different calendar from the Gulf beaches: the south-west monsoon soaks it from June to October, and the driest, most settled months run December to April. This is one of the oldest rainforests on Earth, and even in the dry season a short shower is never a surprise.

Limestone karst and jungle in Khao Sok national park

The park has two faces — the jungle trails and river around the village, and the drowned limestone world of Cheow Lan lake, where floating raft houses sit beneath vast cliffs. Both are open year-round; the season mainly decides how muddy your boots get and how dramatic the morning mist is.

  • Driest months: December–April
  • Wettest stretch: June–October
  • Rafflesia bloom season: roughly December–February
  • Rain or shine, Cheow Lan lake is spectacular
Good to know

Good to know

  • Spend at least one night on a Cheow Lan raft house — the dawn chorus and mist are the park's greatest show.
  • In the green season, leech socks and a dry bag are the two purchases you will not regret.
  • Book January–February lake stays ahead; raft houses are small and fill quickly.
  • Combine Khao Sok with the Gulf coast in December–April, when both sides of the peninsula are at their driest.

Dry season: December to April

The comfortable months: firmer trails, easier river canoeing and the most settled skies for a night on a raft house at Cheow Lan lake. This is also the season to look for the rafflesia, the world's largest flower, which blooms in the park roughly from December to February — guides know where the buds are.

Wildlife-spotting is at its most rewarding as the forest slowly dries: gibbons sing at dawn, hornbills cross the ridges, and animals come to the water. Book lake raft houses ahead in January and February, when demand peaks.

The green season: June to October

The monsoon months are wet — expect rain most days, often in long afternoon bursts — but they are also Khao Sok at its most alive. Waterfalls thunder, the jungle steams, and the dawn mist on Cheow Lan lake is at its otherworldly best. Bring proper rain gear and a dry bag for everything.

The trade-offs are real: trails turn muddy, leeches come out in force (leech socks are sold locally and worth it), and some caves and routes close when water runs high. Go with a guide, keep plans flexible, and the green season will repay you with an almost empty park.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for Cheow Lan lake?

December to April brings the most settled weather for raft-house stays and boat trips. The green season has rain, but also the most dramatic mist and thundering waterfalls — both are memorable.

When does the rafflesia bloom in Khao Sok?

Roughly December to February. Each flower lasts only a few days, so ask local guides what is blooming — they track the buds through the season.

How wet is the rainy season in Khao Sok?

June to October is the wettest stretch, with rain most days, muddy trails and active leeches. Tours still run, but pack rain gear, dry bags and leech socks, and keep plans flexible.

How does Khao Sok differ from the Gulf coast weather?

It is roughly opposite. Khao Sok, inland to the west, is wettest June–October, while the Gulf beaches get their heavy rain October–December. A dry-season Khao Sok trip pairs neatly with the Gulf islands.
