Where to stay in Khao Sok

Sleep by a jungle river under limestone cliffs, or float on an emerald lake an hour's boat ride from the nearest road. Khao Sok does both brilliantly.

Village river or floating lake?

Khao Sok accommodation splits neatly in two. Khlong Sok village, at the park entrance, is the practical base: bungalows, treehouses and lodges line the river beneath the karst walls, with restaurants and trek operators a short stroll away. You fall asleep to the river and wake to gibbon calls — for surprisingly little money.

Morning mist over Cheow Lan Lake

The second option is the one people cross the world for: raft houses on Cheow Lan Lake, floating villages of cabins moored beneath sheer limestone towers. There's no road, no wifi worth mentioning, and swimming off your doorstep at dawn. Most visitors do both — village first, then the lake.

Good to know

Good to know

  • Book the lake before the village — raft-house beds are the scarce resource.
  • Pack a dry bag and a torch for lake stays; luggage travels by longtail boat.
  • Treehouses are wonderful but bring earplugs — the jungle is loud at 5am.
  • Electricity on basic rafts often runs only in the evening; charge everything beforehand.

Khlong Sok village: treehouses to tented luxury

The village suits every budget. Simple riverside bungalows and treehouses give you the full jungle soundtrack for a modest price; mid-range lodges add pools and better bathrooms. It's the right base for hiking the park's trails, tubing the river, and joining wildlife walks at dawn or dusk.

At the top end, luxury tented camps set canvas suites into the rainforest — proper beds, open-air bathrooms, guided activities included. They cost several times a bungalow but deliver the jungle without a single hard edge, and they're a favourite for honeymooners breaking the beach-to-beach routine.

Cheow Lan Lake: raft houses on the water

The lake's raft houses range from basic national-park rafts — thin mattress, shared facilities, spectacular view — to comfortable private eco-lodges with real beds, en-suites and even air-conditioned floating villas. All are reached by longtail boat from Ratchaprapha pier, and all put you on the water when the mist lifts at sunrise.

One night is magical, two is better: day trips give you barely three hours on the lake, while overnighters get the dawn safari by boat, hornbills overhead and the lake to themselves after the tour groups leave. Book weeks ahead in high season — beds on the water are genuinely limited.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Should I stay in the village or on the lake?

Both, ideally. The village is the base for treks and river activities; the lake is the once-in-a-trip experience. Two nights in Khlong Sok plus one on a raft house is the classic pattern.

Are the lake raft houses comfortable?

They vary widely. National-park rafts are basic — mattress on the floor, shared loos — while private eco-lodges offer proper beds and en-suite bathrooms. Pick by your comfort threshold and book early either way.

Do I need to book Khao Sok accommodation in advance?

Village lodges usually have space outside peak weeks, but lake raft houses sell out well ahead, especially December to March. Book the lake first and build the rest around it.

Is Khao Sok worth it if I'm short on time?

Yes, but give it two nights minimum. With one night you'll spend most of your time in transit; with two or three you get a trek, the river and the lake without rushing.
