Food & eating in Ban Krut

The best food in Ban Krut is always the freshest: seafood pulled from the Gulf the same morning, bought at the market and cooked simply with garlic, lime, chilli and pepper. The Platoo fish restaurant is locally famous for this — the Thai spice levels are genuine, so ask for 'less spicy' if you are not used to it.

What you'll see on menus

Most restaurants offer the standard mix of Thai classics: fried rice (khao phat), pad thai, stir-fried basil with meat, green and red curry, spicy papaya salad (som tum), and a wide selection of whole grilled fish and seafood cooked with Thai herbs. Fresh prawns, crab and squid are available almost everywhere at reasonable prices.

The local market

The local fresh food market runs opposite Wat Thong Chai Thammachak. Ask locals what day it operates. In the early morning you can buy fresh fish, vegetables, herbs and prepared curries. Some small shops are also clustered around the 7-Eleven store near the railway station, and Suwan Pharmacy is close to the station for medicines and essentials.

Vegetarian & vegan

Ban Krut is not primarily catering to vegetarians, but Café Bankrut is vegetarian-friendly and does well for plant-based options. In other places, ask for dishes without meat — tofu substitution and extra vegetables are usually possible if you ask clearly.

Food tips

Practical advice

  • Always choose busy places where food turns over quickly, especially for seafood.
  • Ask for "pet nit noi" (a little spicy) if you want manageable heat.
  • Drink bottled water throughout your stay; be cautious with ice in smaller local places.
  • Most local restaurants are cash-only — bring enough Thai baht for the evening.
  • If you have allergies, write them in Thai on a card to show when ordering.
Don't miss the street cart scene in the late afternoon near the village: grilled chicken, sticky rice, papaya salad, roti and fresh smoothies — a cheap complete meal for under 150 baht.
