Samui's view, without Samui's crowds

Khanom sits on the mainland directly opposite Ko Samui, and the comparison flatters it: the same sea, a fraction of the visitors, and prices from another decade. The town itself is a workaday Thai district town; the beaches — Nadan running long and straight, Nai Phlao curving under green hills — are where you'll sleep.

Accommodation is low-rise and low-key: modest beach resorts with pools, family-run bungalow gardens, and a growing crop of apartment-style stays suited to longer visits. Most guests are Thai families and weekenders, which sets the tone — quiet weekdays, cheerful weekends, and seafood dinners with your feet in the sand.

Good to know

  • Book ahead for Thai public holidays and long weekends — that's when Khanom actually fills.
  • Go for the pink dolphins in the morning, when the sea is calmest and sightings likeliest.
  • A motorbike transforms Khanom — beaches, viewpoints and waterfalls are spread over several kilometres.
  • Many small resorts charge noticeably less if you book direct once you've seen the place — arrive, look, then extend.

Nadan and Nai Phlao: pick your beach

Nadan Beach is the practical choice: a long, wide strand within easy reach of town, 7-Elevens and restaurants, with mid-range resorts and guesthouses dotted along the beach road. The sand is broad enough that even on a busy Saturday you're never short of space.

Nai Phlao, further south, is prettier and quieter — coconut palms, headlands, and most of Khanom's nicer resorts tucked between the hills and the water. Rooms here range from simple fan bungalows to comfortable pool resorts, and sunrise over the Gulf comes straight to your terrace.

Bungalows, apartments and longer stays

Between the resorts sit Khanom's charmers: small family-run bungalow places where the owners cook, remember your name, and lend you a motorbike. They're modestly priced, often steps from the sand, and the best fit if you want the coast at its most personal.

Khanom also suits slow travel. Apartment-style stays and serviced rooms rent by the week or month at gentle rates, and a small community of long-stayers has quietly formed here. Book a few nights first, then extend — almost everyone does. The pink dolphin boats, khao lam sticky-rice stalls and empty sand will still be there.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Which is the best beach to stay on in Khanom?

Nai Phlao for scenery and the pick of the resorts; Nadan for space, convenience and proximity to town. Both are quiet by any island standard — you can't really choose wrong.

Is Khanom very touristy?

No — that's its appeal. Most guests are Thai holidaymakers, foreign visitors are few, and even high season feels unhurried. Weekends and Thai public holidays are the liveliest times.

Where should I stay for the pink dolphin trips?

Anywhere in Khanom works — the boats leave from the canal near town and every guesthouse can arrange a morning trip. Staying on Nadan Beach puts you closest to the departure point.

Is Khanom good for families?

Very. Calm shallow water for much of the year, resorts with pools, seafood restaurants that welcome children, and the dolphin boats as a guaranteed hit. Thai families have holidayed here for years for exactly these reasons.
